Liontamer is a fund manager who specialises in capital protected investments (sometimes called ‘structured retail products’). Launched in 2003, Liontamer is well-known in the New Zealand market for its innovative range of capital protected funds that access a range of investment opportunities including global, regional and emerging markets, commodities, as well as ecological investment themes such as water and alternative energy.

Our name 'Liontamer'

So why did we choose 'Liontamer'? In short, it comes down to two factors. First, it says exactly what we do, but in a slightly unusual way. The 'Lion' symbolises the world financial markets, often volatile and aggressive. And we are 'taming' the markets by providing investors with capital protection. That way, we are able to take some of the fear out of investing.

Second, we chose the name because it was different and we are different. We are providing investments which are new and innovative. We hope our name provides both a talking point and a reminder that there are always new ways of doing things.
Who provides capital protection?

When you invest with Liontamer, capital protection will always be provided by a large global financial institution with a high credit rating (an indicator of financial strength). For example, with Liontamer's funds to date, protection has been provided by KBC Bank, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Barclays Bank and Deutsche Bank, all strong financial institutions. The trusts invested in ‘notes’ or 'financial assets' issued by these global investment banks in the same way as you deposit funds with a bank or building society in New Zealand. As with any investment, the financial strength of the institution is absolutely key and that’s why we selected these leading financial institutions. Their Standard & Poor’s credit ratings are all at least A+ (as at January 2010).

Our structure

Liontamer is an Australian investment management company. When you invest with Liontamer, you are buying units in an Australian unit trust. Our investments will normally only be available for a ‘limited window’ of 6 to 10 weeks, and each new investment we launch is in a new trust. We call this an 'umbrella' structure and it makes it very quick and easy to bring new investments to the market.

The key tax objectives in relation to our funds are that the investments are taxed at marginal rates in the hands of investors and the trusts are not taxed on an accruals basis and are therefore only taxable when the returns are paid out. We believe we have a very tax efficient structure which is constantly monitored so that we can adapt to changes in the tax environment.

We use one of New Zealand’s leading law firms, Bell Gully, for legal and tax advice. Our tax adviser, David Simcock, is the chairman of Bell Gully and has been named the number one practitioner in New Zealand for corporate tax expertise by Who’s Who Legal.

  • Independent. Our independence allows us to deal with a host of international investment banks: KBC Bank, Barclays, Morgan Stanley, UBS and Deutsche Bank.
